Artist Statement
My works are of contemporary landscapes that create a sensation of nature. Born out of a longing for the landscape of my home, these landscapes are an appreciation of time and land. I seek to depict them not as majestic statements of natural beauty, but rather as everyday landscapes possessing mysterious qualities. While I began this body of work depicting daytime landscapes, as I continued, I became interested in how tone and sense experiences change with time and lighting.
Each of the artists Emily Nelligan, Andrew Wyeth, and Casper David Friedrich have a profound understanding and respect for the land they represent and are highly influential in my practice. The subject matter alone allows me to interact and react to the long history of landscape artists and their relationships to their environment. I represent my own perspective of my surroundings and include power lines, street lights, and infrastructure that are now in coexistence with the land that has been around for millions of years.
